Knowledge transitions in the development of a 100 percent renewable energy system

Carlo and Tara presented findings from the SusRenew project and the policy brief Climate risk in the transition to renewable energy at the NTRANS Webinar Series on 25 March 2026.

The presentation explored how climate change affects the Norwegian energy system — and how these impacts are evolving as the system itself undergoes transformation. As Norway moves towards a 100 per cent renewable energy system, climate risks can no longer be viewed as isolated effects of individual weather events. Following the IPCC framework, the presenters highlighted how risk is shaped by the interaction between hazards, exposure, and vulnerability, all of which are shifting as the energy transition advances.

Key topics included how compound climate events — where multiple weather extremes occur simultaneously or in sequence — pose challenges for an increasingly electrified and weather-dependent energy system. Growing grid pressure, new exposure patterns, and limited integration of climate risk into energy planning were discussed as factors that could lead to high socio-economic costs and influence trust in energy security.

The session underscored the need to move beyond a "hazards-only" perspective towards strategies that enhance robustness and adaptive capacity in the energy system.
